Protecting Our Environment

“It is our responsibility to protect our environment. Whether it’s through recycling, protecting our wilderness, or keeping our oceans healthy – if we don’t do the job, no one will. Protecting natural resources in our region is one of my top priorities.”

Northern California Wilderness: Protecting a California Treasure

Northern California provides some of the most picturesque and important natural landscapes our country has to offer. These areas provide not only escapes from hectic urban life, but natural resources that are the economic and cultural cornerstone for Northern California’s coastal communities.

Thanks to Congressman Thompson, much of this Northern Californian treasure is protected by law, making it the largest addition of wilderness to California in more than a decade.

The law protects 273,000 acres of wilderness in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake and Napa Counties. It also designates 21 miles of Scenic River and approximately 51,000 acres as a Recreation Management Area for off-highway vehicles and mountain bikes.

Computer Recycling: Keeping Our Environment Clean and Green
According to the U.S. EPA, over 20 million personal computers became obsolete in 1998. Only 13% were reused or recycled. Computer parts contain hazardous materials such as lead and mercury that, if improperly handled or disposed, can be released into the environment. Recycling computers solves this problem by reusing computer parts and correctly disposing of hazardous electronic waste.

Earlier this year, Congressman Thompson introduced legislation to encourage increased computer recycling and create an easy, user-friendly way for people to recycle their computers.
