The North Coast has been well served by Mike Thompson in the U.S. Congress, and we believe the Blue Dog Democrat has earned the chance to serve another term.
He's a pragmatic public servant, with a practical view of what can be done by government, and what cannot. He's proven himself repeatedly to be fiscally responsible, and in times like these, when money is scarce, that is an indispensable trait.
While Thompson hails from St. Helena, he has repeatedly proven himself to be accessible to North Coast residents, and makes numerous trips up here throughout the year to field the concerns and comments of his constituents. That, coupled with the impeccable service of his field representative, Liz Murguia, means our area is well covered.
The Democrats do appear to be on the verge of creating huge majorities in both houses of the U.S. Congress, and we feel that Thompson is the ideal kind of democrat to have in Washington, D.C., during such a change.
While Thompson is a loyal Democrat, fiscally he's a centrist and therefore could serve to rein in some of his party's more expensive tendencies.
For these reasons and more, the Times-Standard endorses Thompson for another term.
