The First Congressional District

California’s 1st Congressional District is renowned for its majestic scenery, economic vitality, and local charm. Starting at the Oregon Border, the 1st District runs south along the Pacific coast to San Pablo Bay and includes Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, and parts of Sonoma and Yolo counties.

The 1st Congressional District’s economic engine is fueled by the world famous wine regions of Northern California; recreational activities such as hiking, biking, horse back riding, boating, and fishing; sustainable timber industries; high tech companies; agriculture; and small businesses. To foster these industries, the District includes UC Davis, Humboldt State University, Napa Valley, Woodland, and Mendocino Community Colleges, College of the Redwoods, and Pacific Union College.

The District is also home to some of the country’s most precious environmental resources. At its north end, the District includes Humboldt Redwoods State Park and Redwood National Park, both of which contain some of world’s oldest Redwood forests. The District’s south end encompasses the San Pablo Bay and a portion of California’s Delta, home to a variety of native plant life and endangered species. Congressman Thompson recently secured passage of a bill that protects 273,000 acres of wilderness, the largest addition of protected wilderness in California in more than a decade.

One of the District’s best characteristics is its local charm. Whether enjoying the variety of music played at the annual Mendocino Music Festival, tasting wine at one of Napa Valley’s many Harvest festivals, perusing the latest art collection at Eureka’s monthly Arts Alive event, enjoying the outdoors at California Duck Days in Yolo County, or buying fruit at Sonoma’s world class farmer’s markets – you will always feel welcome in the 1st District.
