Our Nation’s total outstanding debt is more than $7 trillion. With an estimated population at close to 300 million, each citizen’s share of this debt is approximately $25,000 and rising. In just the last year, the national debt has continued to increase at an average of $1.69 billion per day.
Congressman Thompson believes that the federal budget should emphasize fiscal responsibility, saving the money necessary to keep Social Security and Medicare solvent and pay down the national debt.
Congressman Thompson is also an active member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of fiscally responsible House Democrats who stress pragmatic solutions to budgetary and economic issues.
Each year, the Blue Dogs compile a realistic alternative budget that pares down the deficit, balances the budget, holds the line on spending, and better funds vital issues like veterans’ benefits, education, first responders, agriculture and health care.
