Jobs and The Economy

“Middle class families, and those fighting to get into the middle class, were hit hardest by the economic downturn. We must make smart investments in infrastructure, new economic engines and education that will put people back to work, and put our economy on solid ground for years to come.”

Jobs are my number one priority, and the best way to get our economy going is to put Americans back to work fixing our schools, roads, and bridges. I have a jobs plan that I am fighting for in Congress that puts people back to work rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, and decreases our national debt by nearly $65 billion over ten years.

My plan would invest more than $300 billion in our roads and bridges by passing a long-term transportation bill. There is no better way to create good-paying jobs. For every $1 billion we invest in transportation improvements, more than 30,000 jobs are created. Anyone who has driven our local roads knows improvements are overdue. More can and must be done.

In Solano County, by updating the I-80/680/12 interchange, we can create 1,350 jobs. In Lake County, improvements to Highway 29 would create 900 jobs.  In Napa County, updating the 1st Street/SR-29 intersection would create more than 500 jobs. In Sonoma County, US Route 101 widening and bridge maintenance would create more than 9,000 jobs. And in Contra Costa County, reconstruction at the I-680/SR-4 interchange would create more than 8,730 jobs.

And we can do this all without adding a dime to the deficit. My plan is entirely paid for and decreases the national debt by asking the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share.

In addition to creating jobs by rebuilding our infrastructure, we also have to focus on building our new economy. And one of the best ways to do that is to invest in renewable energy. I will keep working to make sure our district is a national leader in the development and manufacturing of clean energy technology.

Finally, we must invest in education and worker retraining so that our nation continues to have the world’s best entrepreneurs and innovators to compete in a global economy.

Infrastructure, a new economy, and education – these are the keys to job creation, and a strong American economy for years to come.
